Recalculation in the Manufacturing Labor Market

A new NY times story about how manufacturing jobs are having difficulty hiring people because of a skills shortage.

Some random thoughts:
  • This seems to me to be a failure of education.
  • Eventually companies in the US will have to increase and fund their own education efforts (beyond just specific skills training), because it seems that our k-12 educational establishment has failed to teach a significant portion of our labor force.
  • This all fits Arnold Kling's "recalculation" story.

  1. You can easily find people who can do 9th grade math, but they won't get paid $12/hr.

Almost everyone I know who can do 9th grade math (basic algebra). Ended up going to college, so maybe there is an odd break in the distribution near that skill level?

For math: Type your TeX math expression, in $$$$...$$$$.
For example $$$$\sqrt{a^2+b^2}$$$$
Looks like $$\sqrt{a^2+b^2}$$
If you need to type a double dollar sign, instead type four of them together
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LEAVE AN OPEN DOUBLE DOLLAR SIGN IN THE COMMENTS.
